Pole Barn vs Garage — Which is Right for Your Property?
If you need covered storage or workspace on a rural property in Lawrence County or Giles County, the choice between a pole barn and a traditional framed garage comes up regularly. We build both, so here's an honest comparison without a sales agenda either direction.
What's the actual difference?
A traditional garage is built with conventional wood framing — 2x6 studs on a concrete foundation or slab, a wood-framed roof with standard trusses, and either wood siding (LP SmartSide, cedar, T1-11) or masonry exterior. It looks like a residential structure because it's built like one. These are the garages attached to homes and the standalone garages you see in established neighborhoods.
A pole barn (also called post-frame building) uses large treated posts embedded in the ground or mounted to a concrete slab, with horizontal girts between the posts and metal or wood siding and metal roofing attached to the girts. The posts carry the structural load — there's no conventional stud wall framing. This structural system allows for large clear-span interiors without interior support columns, and is faster and less expensive to erect than conventional framing for the same floor area.

- 30x40 pole barn (slab, metal siding, metal roof): $38,000–$60,000
Pole barns consistently deliver more square footage per dollar for the same use case. The cost advantage grows with building size — a 60x80 structure is substantially cheaper in pole barn form than in conventional framing.
When a traditional garage makes more sense
Aesthetic matching: If the structure needs to match the appearance of an existing home — particularly in in-town neighborhoods in Lawrenceburg or Pulaski — a traditionally framed garage with wood or fiber cement siding and a shingle or metal roof blends in better than a metal pole barn.
Attached to a residence: Garages attached to a home are almost always built with conventional framing because the structural and fire-separation requirements make post-frame construction impractical for attached configurations.
HOA or deed restrictions: Some subdivisions and deed restrictions prohibit metal buildings. In those cases, a traditionally framed garage is the only option.
When a pole barn makes more sense
Maximum square footage per budget: For the same cost, a pole barn delivers significantly more covered space. If you need 2,400 sq ft of storage and have a $60,000 budget, a pole barn can get you there. A traditional garage at that budget tops out around 1,200–1,600 sq ft.
Rural properties: The agricultural and rural character of most of Lawrence County and Giles County makes pole barn aesthetics entirely appropriate. Metal buildings fit the landscape.
Large equipment: Agricultural equipment, RVs, boats, and trailers are typically stored in taller, wider structures that pole barn design accommodates more naturally than standard garage height and width dimensions.
