How to Choose a Concrete Contractor in Tennessee

Concrete work is permanent. A driveway that's cracked because the base was inadequate, a patio that's settled because the subgrade wasn't compacted, or a slab that's too thin for its intended use — these failures last for decades and cost significant money to fix or replace. Choosing the right contractor matters more than most homeowners realize.

Verify licensing and insurance

In Tennessee, contractors performing residential work over $25,000 must be licensed by the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors. For residential work, ask for a Home Improvement License number and verify it at the TBLC website. Also verify that the contractor carries both general liability insurance (covers damage to your property) and workers' compensation insurance (covers injuries to their workers on your property). Don't take their word for it — ask for certificates of insurance listing you as an additional insured, and call the insurance company to confirm the policy is current.

Ask specifically about base preparation

The most important question you can ask a concrete contractor: how deep will you excavate, and what base material will you install? A quality contractor will excavate to stable native soil, install 4 inches of compacted crushed stone, and compact it with mechanical equipment before forming. A low-quality contractor will form and pour directly on whatever's there — sometimes minimal grading, sometimes existing disturbed soil. The concrete itself looks identical from the surface; the difference only appears when the concrete starts to crack and settle in 5–10 years.

Look for written contracts and detailed quotes

A professional contractor provides a written quote that specifies: the area to be poured (in square feet), the thickness, the reinforcement type (wire mesh or rebar), the finish type, and whether site preparation and demo are included. If a quote is vague — "concrete driveway, $8,000" — you have no protection when shortcuts are taken. Detailed quotes also make it easier to compare estimates apples-to-apples, because not all quotes include the same scope.

Check local reviews and ask for references

Google reviews are useful, but ask specifically for references from projects similar to yours. A contractor who does excellent residential driveways may not be the right fit for a large commercial slab, and vice versa. Look for reviews that mention specific aspects of the work — drainage, finish quality, base prep, cleanup — not just generic praise.

Red flags to avoid

• Demands large cash deposits upfront (more than 10–20% of the project)
• Refuses to provide proof of insurance or license
• Can't provide a written, itemized quote
• Promises unusually low prices that don't make sense relative to other quotes
• Knocks on your door unsolicited after a storm offering discounted repairs
• Can't name the concrete mix design, strength (PSI), or slump they plan to use
