How Much Does a Concrete Slab Cost?
Concrete slabs are the foundation for garages, pole barns, workshops, and carports throughout Lawrence County and Giles County. The cost depends on size, thickness, and what's included in the prep work. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
Concrete slab cost ranges for Middle Tennessee
- 24x24 slab (garage), 4 inches: $4,500–$7,500
- 30x40 slab (pole barn floor), 4 inches: $10,000–$16,000
- 40x60 slab, 4 inches: $18,000–$28,000
- 6-inch thickness upgrade: Add approximately $2–$3 per square foot
- Rebar grid (vs. wire mesh): Add $1–$2 per square foot
- Broom finish (standard) vs. trowel finish: Trowel finish adds minimal cost
What's included in a slab quote from us
Our slab quotes include: excavation to proper depth, compacted gravel base (typically 4 inches of crushed stone), vapor barrier, wire mesh or rebar per spec, concrete placement and finishing, and control joint cutting. We do not charge separately for the first rescheduled pour due to weather — Middle Tennessee weather is unpredictable and that shouldn't become your problem.
When to choose rebar over wire mesh
Wire mesh is adequate for standard residential garage slabs and light-duty floors. If the slab will see heavy equipment, forklifts, loaded trailers, or is in an area with softer or less consistent subgrade, rebar on a 24-inch grid provides significantly better crack resistance and structural integrity. For pole barn slabs where the posts are set in embedded footings at the perimeter, we always recommend reinforcing the slab to match the post locations.
Vapor barrier — don't skip it
A 6-mil poly vapor barrier under the slab prevents ground moisture from wicking up through the concrete. This matters for any interior use — workshop, living space, or even storage where you don't want rust or mold. In Middle Tennessee, where soil moisture is high in the spring and fall, skipping the vapor barrier is a decision you'll regret.
