Concrete Driveway Thickness Guide — What Thickness Do You Need?

Concrete driveway thickness is one of the most important — and most frequently shortchanged — specifications in residential concrete work. Contractors who quote low prices often achieve those prices by reducing thickness. Here's how to know what thickness your driveway actually needs.

Why thickness matters so much

Concrete's load-bearing capacity grows disproportionately with thickness. A 4-inch slab is not just one inch thinner than a 5-inch slab — the difference in structural capacity is dramatic because concrete's flexural strength is related to the square of the thickness. Going from 4 to 5 inches increases the slab's load-bearing capacity by approximately 50–60%. Going from 4 to 6 inches more than doubles it.

The consequence of under-specifying thickness is cracking. When a heavy vehicle creates a load the slab can't handle, the concrete cracks. These cracks then allow water infiltration, which in Tennessee's freeze-thaw cycles widens and accelerates the damage. What started as a small stress crack becomes a structural failure in 5–10 years.

Tennessee soil and its effect on driveway thickness

The strength of the subgrade under the concrete significantly affects how a slab performs. Well-compacted granular soil or compacted crushed stone provide much better support than soft clay or disturbed fill. On soft or expansive clay subgrades — common in developed areas of Lawrence County — the effective load capacity of a given slab thickness is lower than on stable granular soil.

This is why base preparation matters so much. A 4-inch slab on 4 inches of compacted crushed stone performs dramatically better than a 4-inch slab poured directly on clay subgrade. We always evaluate the subgrade condition during the site visit and recommend the appropriate combination of base preparation and slab thickness for the specific site.

PSI rating — what the concrete mix strength means

Standard residential concrete in our area is 3,000–3,500 PSI (pounds per square inch compressive strength). This is appropriate for most driveways and patios. For driveways subject to heavy loads or for freeze-thaw exposure areas (e.g., at the top of a steep driveway where salt or ice could collect), 4,000 PSI concrete offers better durability. We use 3,500 PSI as our standard for residential driveways in Lawrence and Giles County.
